Course Details:

Saturday Workshop - Platforms

Sunday Workshop - Backchaining

Platforms

Ever wondered what all the fuss with platforms/placeboards is about?

Join us for this one day workshop, to find out.

We will explore

  • the "how’s“ of the start of using the platform, how to magnify and find the right size platform for your dog and for the behaviours you’re working at.

  • The list of behaviours that platforms can help us build, is practically endless.

  • Want to teach a cool trick - platform can help.

  • Want to teach your dog every day life-skills - platform can be a help.

  • Want to teach specific movement patterns (eg tucked sit instead of rocked back sit) - platform can be a help.

  • Want to teach complex obedience behaviours - platform can help.

Apart from all that, the platform can also function as a limitation in workspace, for the dogs that might have a bigger desire to follow the world around them, and thereby help set the stage for a higher rate if reinforcement in your training sessions.

Who is it for?

The behaviours we are working on, will be individually adjusted to you and your dog, so you don’t need to have experience.

Dogs:

We are committed to making sure that the dogs attending the workshops are able to work in a safe

and comfortable environment.  To aid this there will be plenty of space for working inside and pods can

be erected to provide a visual barrier if requested.  Dog's must be secure and comfortable waiting in the car in between activities.

Backchaining

  • Building duration? Backchain it.

  • Building tiny details for incredible precision? Backchain it.

  • Teaching exercises for sport? Backchain it. Teaching heeling? Backchain it.

  • Changing a habit? Backchain it.

  • Teaching every day life skills? You guessed it.. Backchain it.

Backchaining is a cornerstone technique to build many behaviours for any purpose. We’ll talk about why backchained behaviours are so strongly and reliably welded together. We’ll learn about stimulus control, the double effect of each behaviour in the chain as both a cue and a reinforcer and the impact this has on reliability. We’ll talk about what to do when there’s a mistake in the chain and also how to address existing annoying behaviours through backchaining. We’ll cover the importance of predictability, clean loops and reinforcement strategies as a prerequisite for both dog and handler in order to do backchaining well. In this one day workshop you will get a speed course in how to apply this correctly from the start with both yourself and your animals.

Needed for the day

3 behaviours that have been taught to you dog, using positive reinforcement.

Dogs:

We are committed to making sure that the dogs attending the workshops are able to work in a safe
